There were also 5 difficulties: Easy, Normal, Hard, MaXimum (MX) and Super Crazy (SC). DJ Battles were able to have up to 6 players in a single battle. The game had 2 play styles: 5-Key and 7-Key and had various modes like Free Mode where you play whatever songs you have unlocked, Ranking Mode where you play 3 stages and upload your score to the online leaderboards, Course Mode where you have to complete songs while completing the objectives given to you and 3 variants of DJ Battle (Score, Item and DJ Mission). The game was absolutely fun to play and I spent countless hours playing it. I got my first taste of DJMAX in December of 2004. He accepted and sent me an E-mail containing login information for Netmarble and a Korean E-mail account. My friend asked this person if he could make me an account too. My friend got into the Korean version because he knew somebody on the internet that lives in South Korea and that person made an account for him.

Not only was it in a language that I couldn't even read, it also introduced me to a little thing that Korean gaming services always require at signup: A Korean Social Security Number (KSSN). However, creating a Korean Netmarble account was a massive hassle.

Due to the game's similar gameplay style to beatmania (minus the turntable), it got me interested and I wanted to have access to it as well. How I heard of DJMAX was through a friend of mine and fellow rhythm game player in late 2004 after he showed me the game running on his laptop.

Sadly, while I have been exposed to most of the series, There are a few games in the series that I never played, including 2 of the 3 arcade games and 2 mobile phone games released in the mid-late 2000s in South Korea. On this post, I'm going to do a retrospective of series as I remember it. Over the last decade, The DJMAX series has evolved many times from releasing games on handheld systems (primarily on PlayStation handheld systems) and mobile devices to releasing a series of games in the arcades, making a name for the series internationally.

Released originally as an free to play online rhythm game for the PC in the Summer of 2004, DJMAX was developed by Pentavision Entertainment, a company founded by Cha Seung-hee and former employees of his previous company Family Production which at the time when the team was disassembled in 2003 was owned by Amuseworld, creators of another Korean rhythm game legend called EZ2DJ. Welcome to a Korean rhythm game legend by the name of DJMAX ( Korean: 디제이맥스). Welcome to my retrospective to one of my favorite rhythm game franchises of all time and the 2nd rhythm game series I ever played, the first series being Konami's beatmania IIDX. Please close any apps you may have open and close any tabs in your internet browser and/or make sure your PC can handle checking this post. I personally felt that to do a retrospective on this series justice, I need to use videos instead of a bunch of screenshots. WARNING! :This post has a lot of videos in it and may cause some devices to take a long time loading it or may cause your browser and/or device to stop responding.
